Standing seam is a metal roof made from long, continuous panels that run from ridge to eaves, joined by raised seams folded over on site. There are no nails or screws through the surface, which is why it copes so well with driving rain and shallow pitches — the kind of roof that defeats tiles.
We install Catnic steel standing seam, and we’re straight about why: it gives you the clean, flat lines architects specify zinc for, at a fraction of zinc’s cost, in a material that’s easier to work in Wiltshire weather. Most of our standing seam work is extensions, dormers, porches and garden rooms — anywhere a flat-looking roof is visible from the garden and needs to look deliberate rather than patched.
A job includes stripping the existing covering, checking and repairing the deck below, laying breather membrane, then setting out and folding the panels so the seam spacing lines up with the building — window centres, ridge lines, the corner of the extension. That setting-out is most of the skill; get it wrong and a good roof still looks wrong. We finish with matching flashings, trims and any guttering alterations the new profile needs.
If standing seam isn’t right for your roof, we’ll say so. On a shallow garage roof out of sight, EPDM flat roofing often does the same job for less.

Per square metre, yes — usually more than concrete tile, less than natural slate, and a lot less than zinc. On the extensions and dormers where it’s normally used, the area is small enough that the difference in the total is modest. We’ll quote both if you want to compare.
No. The panels sit on a solid deck with membrane and insulation underneath, not on open rafters like an agricultural shed. In a habitable room you won’t notice it over a tiled roof.
Usually not for a new extension or garden room roof. Changing the covering on an existing roof can need consent in a conservation area or on a listed building — common enough around Bradford-on-Avon and Bath. We’ll tell you what we think and you can check with the council before we order anything.
A dormer or porch is two to three days. A single-storey extension roof is usually four to six, depending on the state of the deck underneath and the weather — we don’t fold panels in high wind.
