Finished guttering and downpipe

What this covers

Not sure if it needs clearing, repairing or replacing? Call and describe what you're seeing — it's often a smaller job than people expect.

Guttering is one of the cheapest things on a house to put right and one of the most expensive to ignore. A gutter that overflows or leaks soaks the wall below it, rots the fascia and soffit it's fixed to, and works its way into damp patches inside — problems that cost many times over what fixing the gutter would have.

The work covers full replacement, repairs to joints and brackets, realigning sections where the fall's wrong, downpipes and outlets, and clearing. Most jobs are one or two of these, not all of them — we'll tell you which.

uPVC is what most houses get — cheap, low maintenance, does the job. On period properties, cast iron is often the correct look, and if it's sound it's worth keeping and repairing rather than replacing; it's heavy, expensive to renew, and lasts decades when it isn't left to rust through. Aluminium is the longer-life alternative to uPVC where you'd rather not do this again in fifteen years.

Common faults: sections sagging between brackets, joints leaking at the seals, a fall that's wrong so water sits in the gutter or overshoots the front instead of reaching the outlet, gutters undersized for the roof area on an extension, blocked outlets and downpipes, and overflow at valleys in heavy rain where two roof slopes meet.

Gutters fix straight to the fascia board, so a rotten fascia means the gutter has nothing sound to hold it — see fascias and soffits if the boards themselves need attention too.

What to expect

Five steps, same on every job.

  1. 01

    Inspection and quote

Leith checks the gutters, joints, falls, downpipes and outlets, and takes photos of what's causing the problem. You get a written quote — free, no obligation.

  2. 02

    Agreed scope and price

What's included, which material, and a start date. The price doesn't move unless we find something worse underneath and agree it with you first.

  3. 03

    The work

Old guttering comes off where it's being replaced, brackets are refixed or renewed, falls are set correctly, and new sections, joints, downpipes and outlets are fitted and connected.

  4. 04

    Tidy-up and sign-off

Old guttering and offcuts taken away, site swept, and we walk the finished job together with the photos from before.

  5. 05

    Our workmanship guarantee

Up to 10 years on the installation itself, from LH Roofing, confirmed in writing in your quote.

Common questions

Anything not answered here, ask on the phone — it's a two-minute conversation.

Once a year for most houses, more often if you're under overhanging trees. Most blockages start with moss and debris coming off the roof above, not the gutter itself — see gutter cleaning and maintenance for how to keep on top of it between visits.

Depends on the cause. A leaking joint or a loose bracket is usually a repair. Sections that have sagged out of shape, corroded through, or a run with several faults close together is normally cheaper and more reliable to replace outright than to patch piece by piece. We'll tell you which one it is.

Usually one of: a fall that's wrong so water can't reach the outlet fast enough, a downpipe or outlet that's blocked, a gutter that was undersized for the roof area when an extension went up, or a valley where two roof slopes meet overwhelming the gutter below it. Each has a different fix — we'll work out which applies before quoting.

Yes, and we'll repair it instead where it's sound rather than replace it unnecessarily — it's expensive to renew and often worth keeping. Where sections have rusted through or the profile's beyond repair, we replace like-for-like so it still looks right on a period property.
