Roofing in Salisbury

Three kinds of roof in one town — and three different conversations.

Salisbury is a straight run for us — 25 miles down the A36 through the Wylye Valley, about forty minutes with the van loaded. We’re there often enough that a look at a leak usually happens the same week rather than the same month.

It’s a mixed town to roof. The terraces around Fisherton and Milford are Victorian, mostly Welsh slate with lead valley gutters between the pairs — and those valleys are where the water gets in, not the slate. Bemerton and Bishopdown are 1930s to post-war semis under concrete tile, which fail predictably at the ridge and the flashings. Then there’s the Close, the city-centre conservation area and the thatch and plain clay tile out in the valleys, where matching the existing material matters more than the price of it and consent comes before anything gets ordered. We quote all three kinds of roof differently, because they’re three different jobs.

Called about
Damp patch on a bedroom ceiling, blamed on slipped slates by two previous visitors.
What it was
Split lead in the shared valley gutter, backing water under the slate courses either side.
What we did
Stripped back three courses, re-lined the valley in code 5 lead, re-slated with matched reclaimed Welsh slate.

Third roofer we’d had out and the first to go up and actually look at the valley. Explained it with photos, did it in two days, and had a word with next door about theirs while he was up there.
