Devizes is about twenty-five minutes north-east of us, out past Seend and along the A361 — close enough that we're up there most weeks. It's a proper market town rather than a suburb of anywhere: one of the largest market places in the country still doing its job, the Kennet & Avon Canal cutting straight through the middle of it, and Wadworth's brewery still brewing in the centre, dray horses and all. Caen Hill's flight of locks is the postcard version, but the town round it is what we're actually roofing — and it's brick as much as it's stone, which sets it apart from the Bath-stone towns further west.

The Georgian and Victorian centre is natural slate and clay tile over brick chimney stacks that need repointing before they need re-flashing, and sash-windowed frontages where the roofline is on show from the pavement and has to look the part. Move out to the newer estates and it's concrete interlocking tile, mostly ridge and flashing failures rather than the roof itself. Out on the edge of the Plain the exposure picks up — more wind-driven rain, more storm work after a bad week, whichever kind of roof it lands on.
