Frome is about fifteen minutes south-west of us, just over the border into Somerset — close enough that it barely feels like leaving, though the county line matters the moment you're filling in a form. It's an old cloth town with more listed buildings than a place this size has any right to, built on ground steep enough that Catherine Hill and the Trinity area are still known by name rather than postcode. Terraces of stone cottages step up the slope in short runs, and the town keeps a strong independent, creative streak — a lot of that period property is in private hands and gets restored a room at a time rather than all at once.

Listed and conservation-area work means matching reclaimed material rather than reaching for what's cheapest, and some of the hillside streets are too narrow for much beyond a hand-barrow up to the scaffold. It isn't all heritage, though — the estates on the edge of town are ordinary concrete tile and plastic guttering, and most of what we do out there is exactly what you'd expect.
